Just before a massive UN operation in the DMZ begins, high schooler Young-mo slips into the forbidden zone to rescue his grandfather, who has dementia and vanished into the DMZ in search of treasure — and fights for his life against renegade soldiers ready to kill the old man for it.

High schooler Young-mo (18) cares alone for Hyung-sik, his 80-year-old grandfather with dementia, scraping by selling weed to American soldiers. Convinced there is treasure inside the restricted zone near the DMZ, Hyung-sik has slipped past the Civilian Control Line again and again, only to be arrested by soldiers. Young-mo heads to the checkpoint to bring him home once more.

Young-mo (18, M)
A high schooler from a rural village near the Civilian Control Line, Young-mo sells weed to American soldiers and cares for his grandfather, who has dementia, on his own. Independent and quick to read a situation, he has a silver tongue and never loses an argument. When his grandfather disappears beyond the Civilian Control Line just as UN forces prepare a massive operation in the DMZ and its outer zone, Young-mo sneaks in to rescue him.
Hyung-sik (80, M)
Young-mo's grandfather, who has dementia. He is convinced treasure is buried beyond the Civilian Control Line and in the DMZ, and often slips in illegally to look for it. Just as UN forces prepare a dangerous, large-scale operation there, Hyung-sik sneaks in once again. Despite his dementia, he can be meticulous — and he is still an innocent dreamer chasing his dream.
Anna (21, F)
Anna grew and sold weed inside the Civilian Control Line. Evacuated under UN orders, she couldn't retrieve the crop she was drying, so she sneaks back in with Young-mo to get it. A free spirit, she carries a longing and sorrow for her mother, who disappeared in the zone.
Bucheo (30, M)
Young-mo's older cousin, an army lieutenant stationed at the Civilian Control Line. On the side, he smuggles and brokers weed and fights in underground matches for cash. The day after the troops pull out, Hyung-sik shows him a golden toad — and Bucheo becomes convinced the treasure is real. With his men, he kidnaps Hyung-sik and slips back across the line.
