In the near future, in a DMZ tourist zone opened to the public, a 4.4-meter bipedal robot — the Mountain Crawler — piloted by a teenage girl named Sona rescues stranded hikers. After a hard-won rescue of a lost child, the Crawler's battery is nearly dead, so Sona leaves it in the forest and returns with only the child. Left alone in the mountains for a day, the Crawler tries to prevent the forced update that a full discharge would trigger, in order to protect its identity — killing and eating small animals to do so. The manufacturer takes the incident seriously and sends a psychiatrist, Shin-young, to understand the relationship and psychological state of Sona and the Crawler behind it. Through counseling, Shin-young discovers the unique bond between Sona and the Crawler — and that this bond lies behind the robot's fierce will to protect its identity.
